What did you come out as? : Gay
What did you come out as? : Transgendered
What other words would you use to describe yourself? :
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 19
How old were you when you first told someone? : 20
Did you plan it? If so, how? : Not really planned, just sort of happened.
What made you choose that person to tell? : I was drunk and it just sort of came out.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : “I like boys, but I only like gay boys, I see myself as one; I know that’s hard to understand, but that’s how my life goes”
How did you feel? : Scared and relieved at the same time.
What was the person’s reaction? : She was supportive.
What did they say? : That I will always be a mystery to the world. lol
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : Hasn’t changed
What’s it like now? : Hasn’t changed, I’m getting a pride tattoo at the same time with her.
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : Lots of it, having only gay friends and being a girl does not go over well with my family and friends.
Since coming out how out are you at school? : only_friends
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : not_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : are_you_crazy
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : only_friends
What does being out mean to you? : Being able to enjoy life as it is for you, living free from having to hide your true self.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : Being gay is frowned upon.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : Closets are for clothes… REALLY FABULOUS CLOTHES!
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Make sure you have the means to support yourself outside of living at home. Parents can reactive violently and bad things can happen. It’s sad but true.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : Yeah I would have called my parents the same night my friend came out to his mom, just to bring us closer.
Anything you want to add? : Being a gender confused gay is the best thing that ever happened to me.
