Under: Lesbian
Name or Nick Name : Sally
Country or City you are from: : Johannesburg, South Africa
Your Age : 20
Your Gender : Female
What did you come out as? : Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself? :
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 5
How old were you when you first told someone? : 18
Did you plan it? If so, how? : Not planned. Just slipped out.
What made you choose that person to tell? : She’s my best friend.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : Yes.
How did you feel? : Nervous!
What was the person’s reaction? : She was fine
What did they say? : She said: “That’s ok. I suspected it anyway!”
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : Better than ever
What’s it like now? : Still good
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? :
What happened? :
What were peoples’ reactions? :
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : Yes, my mother hates me becasue I’m gay
Since coming out how out are you at school? : not_applicable
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : not_applicable
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : Being openly gay and not being ashamed of who I am.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : No difference
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : People being gay, trying to hide it from the world. Closets are for clothes. Come outta there!!!
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Just be who you are and do not be ashamed. If people can’t accept the real you, then they are not worth being your friends. Nobody can take your identity away from you, and whoever doesn’t like it, its their problem. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. If you are ashamed to stand by your colors, you had better seek another flag. It’s a helluva start, being able to recognize what makes you happy.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : Yes. If I knew then what I know now, that I am not the only “different” person out there, and that being gay is NOT wrong I would have come out earlier.
Anything you want to add? : THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING GAY!
