Under: Queer
Country & city: Sydney, Australia
Name/nickname: RWJS
Age: 23
Gender: M
What did you come out as? I believe the term was ‘queer’
What other words would you use to describe yourself? Gay, queer, fag, homo, I pretty much love it all.
How old were you when you first realized your identity? 12/13
How old were you when you first told someone? 18
Did you plan it? If so, how? No. It just kind of came up in conversation.
What made you choose that person to tell? I figured they were okay with homosexuality since they’d just been talking about making out (with each other… did I mention they were girls?).
Can you remember exactly what you said? ‘Hey bitches, I think Im kind of queer’
How did you feel? Actually, surprisingly nervous (I use bitch and fuck a lot when Im nervous)
What was the person’s reaction? ‘No shit’
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? Haven’t looked back.
What’s it like now? Strained by the fact that they are interstate, otherwise tops.
Since coming out, how “out” are you in the following areas of your life:
Educational institution: Totally
Job: Totally
Family: Immediate
Friends: Totally
What does being out mean to you? Being confident and comfortable enough to say it without it being some big thing. It is a big thing, but it doesnt have to assume monumental significance all the time.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? None really.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? Hiding. And nothing is more boring than a person with an obvious secret.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? Just do it, but do it safely (quite similar to sexual experiences I guess)
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? Yes. I would have pashed the captain of the football team. Then said I was queer to my bitches.
