Under: Lesbian
Name or Nick Name : Pink_Princess
Country or City you are from: : durban
Your Age : 37
Your Gender : female
What did you come out as? : Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : I am a human being, who just happens to be a lesbian
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : age 9
How old were you when you first told someone? : 20
Did you plan it? If so, how? : well I tried to plan it,but there were circumstances that lead me to spew out myself. I had 2 very close friends who had both been abused,I suppose it all became too much to deal with, plus my teacher guessed something was not right with the 3 of us. She called me after school,& asked me about my friends, well i just broke down & told her about the abuse of my friends. Then i told her, about myself.
What made you choose that person to tell? : like i said i tried to plan my coming out,but it planned me. I did feel at ease with my teacher & she gave good advice.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : YES,between the tears “I am Gay”
How did you feel? : i felt horrible. At the time i came out,i still had not come to grip with my sexuality. I just wished God would cure me.
What was the person’s reaction? : she was very kind & cool.
What did they say? : funny enough she said she knew all along, but it was not for her to ask me as that was my personal issue
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : we started a friendship which is still strong today
What’s it like now? : I not sure what you mean by this question? But what its like now is i have accepted myself ,that only happened when i was 27. Life is very good. I suppose we all have our ups & downs, but i love life & myself
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : I think it did happen but i still cannot prove it. But the persons who did so will have to live with their deeds.
What happened? : I think they told my family, because they acted odd towards me.
What were peoples’ reactions? : they were disgusted,I come from a Catholic family so i had to endure all that plus self hatred
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : Yes I have,in clubs, around people. But know i knew if people are homophobia that is their issue, plus there is a chance that they are gay/lesbian themselves.
Since coming out how out are you at school? : not_applicable
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : not_applicable
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : are_you_crazy
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : Been out offered no freedom at first,But now I live my own life,by my standards & values.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : It made a big difference, christains are anti-gay,esp catholics. and that is such an irony, because if you are catholic & you know at very young age “we” are different. The only place we run is into convents & ministries, too become nuns & priest who condemn & have hatred for LGBT
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : the closet is a place for hangers on which we hang our clothing & nothing else.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : I dont know,it is very difficult to know what is the right advice to give.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : No,I am the person i am today because of my experinces, traumas, self doubt, hatred, self love etc
Anything you want to add? : Yes i find my love of writing is my way of dealing with my issues.I am not pubished,I never considered it Until a close friend suggested it. He said my poetry could be a helpful tool to other LGBT people.
