What did you come out as? : Gay
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : creative, dedicated, intelligent
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 12
How old were you when you first told someone? : 19
Did you plan it? If so, how? : The first time I came out it sort of just slipped out but when I officially came out (a few years later) I made sure I knew a) what I wanted to say
and, b) that this was something I wanted to do.
What made you choose that person to tell? : she was my best friend.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : uh…I’m gay.
How did you feel? : very emotional.
What was the person’s reaction? : she asked questions but for the most part was quiet and supportive.
What did they say? : She said that she supported and loved me and nothing would change between us.
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : the same.
What’s it like now? : I moved to a new city so we drifted apart.
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : a co-worker…he just said it to my boss.
What happened? : I stopped talking to my coworker.
What were peoples’ reactions? : Well thank God for Human Resources…no could say anything…:P
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : name calling in school.
Since coming out how out are you at school? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : the freedom to be and share the best of myself. at the same time there’s a responsiblity that I feel to help those who need support.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : HUGE…I’m italian … need I say more?
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : a sadness…no allowing to share who you really are with close friends and family. Never knowing who you are fully. It’s a prevention of self identity.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Keep this in mind…you can never unsay what’s been said. Choose your words and don’t use coming out as a weapon to hurt someone.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : nope.
