Under: Lesbian
Name or Nick Name : Meg
Country or City you are from: : USA
Your Age : 30
Your Gender : Female
What did you come out as? : Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself? :
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : early 20’s I guess
How old were you when you first told someone? : officially? 29
Did you plan it? If so, how? : There were a few people I told first. The very first one didn’t react so well. The next couple were extremely supportive. I couldn’t have told anyone else without them.
What made you choose that person to tell? : The first person I told was my best friend, and a lesbian, so it seemed the logical choice. After that didn’t turn out well, I told two other friends of mine (partners) and that went much better.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : No, but I think I did it over text messaging, almost as a joke, and then we talked about it more in person.
How did you feel? : Scared, nervous, confused
What was the person’s reaction? : The first one said the following: “I feel like I don’t even know you anymore” and “There’s only ever been room for one lesbian” (in her group of friends).
The others just offered their support.
What did they say? : See above
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : Strained with my friend I told first…better now.
No different with my other friends.
What’s it like now? :
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : A friend
What happened? : He told a girl I liked that I liked her and she didn’t know I was a lesbian.
What were peoples’ reactions? : I don’t know. I never talked with her about it. I was extremely upset.
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. :
Since coming out how out are you at school? : only_friends
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : only_friends
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : partly_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : Being comfortable enough with myself to not care who knows. Not trying to hide who I am.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? :
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : It’s the hiding place. It’s where I go when I don’t feel comfortable with this aspect of myself or when I don’t feel I can share that part of me with others.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Take your time, find supportive people
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : I don’t think so.
