What did you come out as? : Gay
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : Fun, Easygoing, sense of humor, loving, kind, charming
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 12
How old were you when you first told someone? : 15
Did you plan it? If so, how? : Yes, I couldnt live with lying to my friends and family anymore so I came out and told them.
What made you choose that person to tell? : Because when your very close with someone you cannot live with them not knowing who you really are, and although being Gay isn't 100% who you are its still a huge part
Can you remember exactly what you said? : Uhmmmmmm, I'm gay..................akward
How did you feel? : Extremely nervous
What was the person’s reaction? : Shocked at first, but then curious as to the ins and outs of it(so to speak)
What did they say? : They said they support me in anything I decide to do, and still love me the same
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : No, it was better!
What’s it like now? : Its completely open and honest.
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : Yes, a spiteful guy who never liked me in high school
What happened? : He posted a comment on me on my Facebook profile
What were peoples’ reactions? : Some we're a bit shocked but positive in general
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : Yes, just degrading stuff said and name calling but it doesnt phase me in the slightest.
Since coming out how out are you at school? : not_applicable
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : only_friends
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : it means freedom to be me and just be myself at all times and live my life on my terms with out anyones permission
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : It was difficult being Afrikaans its quite frowned on by the community so it didn;t make it any easier lol
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : It means hiding who you really are to be accepted by the mass population as "normal"
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : I would say it would be the best decision of your life, the toughest as well, but so worth it :-)
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : All I would do differently is that I would have done it MUCH earlier!
