Under: Lesbian
Name or Nick Name : Jess
Country or City you are from: : Victoria, Australia
Your Age : 27
Your Gender : female
What did you come out as? : Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : good listener….i’m a scorpio. that should answer most of the questions :)
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 17
How old were you when you first told someone? : 17
Did you plan it? If so, how? : Sure did…when i figured out i was gay i just wanted to tell the whole world. I’d finally figured out who i was
What made you choose that person to tell? : it was my sister and her friend. not sure why i told them first. guess they were the first ppl i saw :)
Can you remember exactly what you said? : umm…yup….”I’m gay” my sister was shocked but her friend had a really positive reaction so that helped with my sister. Next was my 3 brother’s and then my mum.
How did you feel? : about coming out? best thing i’ve ever done. so liberating :)
when i was coming out though i was very nervous and stressed but it felt right. Was one of the hardest things i’ve ever had to do but am glad i did it
What was the person’s reaction? : my sister and bro’s were pretty good actually…my mum was a little different though.
What did they say? : the exact words i still hear echoing in my ears…”Why do you say that? What makes you think that?” being thrown at me from the drivers seat.
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : if anything we got closer…my mum and i had drifted apart for a long time but we got our friendship back again over the years
What’s it like now? : really good. Actually i’m at my mum’s now. She’s helping me thru a really bad break up. Couldn’t live without her support and strength
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : i was outed at school. I made the mistake of telling one person whom i shouldn’t of and then the next thing the whole school knows. I didn’t mind that so much but when i heard a gang was after me because i apparently cracked onto one of their sisters that was a little scary.
What happened? : at school i had a mixed reaction. Most ppl thought it was so cool so have a lesbian at school and then others didn’t want a thing to do with me
What were peoples’ reactions? : my closest friends were fantastic. Actually one of my best friends i fell in love with :)i told her and even asked her to marry me *hahaha* She’s str8 but she is the coolest person
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : when myself and my ex were going to pick up my engagement ring from a jeweler in a shopping centre we walked in holding hands. As we’ve walked in it felt like the whole place went quite and ppl started staring and pointing and then they all started moving to the other side of the walk way like we had leprosy or something.
Since coming out how out are you at school? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : being proud of who i am. Being proud of who i’m with. Being me.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : none to be honest. I had a very good upbringing and my mum was fantastic. In case you hadn’t guessed it yet my mum raised 5 kids by herself.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : hiding. Not being who you are. Lying to yourself and everyone around you.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Be strong. Stay positive. If ppl don’t still love and care about you after you’ve come out they’re not worth it
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : nope..and then yes. If i had known what the word lesbian was when i was 13 that’s when i would of come out instead of when i was 17.
Anything you want to add? : i don’t think there’s
enough room here to right everything. I’d love to write more and tell
you about my loves and losses but i don’t think there’s really space
for it
