Under: Lesbian
Country & city: Australia
Name/nickname: Evecho
Age: 37
Gender: Female
What did you come out as (gay, bi, transgendered, use any terms you like here)? Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself?
How old were you when you first realized your identity? I came out somewhere between 21 and 23 years.
How old were you when you first told someone? Pretty soon after I came out to myself.
Did you plan it? If so, how? Yes, but I can’t remember how.
What made you choose that person to tell? Probably because it felt safe enough.
Can you remember exactly what you said? No.
How did you feel? Curious
What was the person’s reaction? Neutrally positive
What did they say? I can’t remember
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? Normal, as per usual.
What’s it like now? Still the same lol
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? I don’t know if I have ever been because I am completely out.
What happened?
What were peoples’ reactions?
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. Just the usual jerks, some mild homophobic reactions. I’ve had worse treatment from sexists.
Since coming out, how “out” are you in the following areas of your life:
Educational institution:
Job: Completely
Family: Very out except my parents don’t use the L word.
Friends: Yes.
What does being out mean to you? Being comfortable and honest.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? It would never have allowed it but I decided to be as out as possible.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? I can understand why some people would chose to stay in it.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? Think about it and do it on your own terms.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? No, I had a great coming out and I love being out. I have never regretted it. I reckon if anyone has a problem with homosexuality then they wouldn’t hang around me, and I wouldn’t want them to either. I can’t recall ever having had a negative reaction to my sexuality from a straight person.
