What did you come out as? : Lesbian
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : Gay, Lesbian, Healthy, Real, Honest,
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 18
How old were you when you first told someone? : 18
Did you plan it? If so, how? : I didn't plan it at all. Actually, my best friend at the time came out to me, and I just came out with her, so to speak!
What made you choose that person to tell? : See Above!
Can you remember exactly what you said? : Really? So do I!
How did you feel? : Relieved
What was the person’s reaction? : I think she thought we would be girlfriends or something!
What did they say? : It pretty much invited conversation
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : It actually strained our relationship, because she liked me and I didn't like her in that way.
What’s it like now? : Haven't talk to her in years
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? : hasn't happened.
What were peoples’ reactions? : The statement I hear the most is that I don't look Gay.. What the hell does that mean?
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : not yet
Since coming out how out are you at school? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : not_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : It means acceptance. I have accepted myself for who I am, and I have accepted my choices and desires.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : I don't think it really had much effect.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : I think the closet is comfortable. It's really hard to come out of it.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Whenever you are ready is the right time.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : I would have come out much sooner.
Anything you want to add? : Although I told the first person at 18, I called my self Bi-Sexual for many years. I didn't come out completely until a few years ago.
