Under: Gay
Name or Nick Name : David
Country or City you are from: : Calgary
Your Age : 24
Your Gender : male
What did you come out as? : Gay
What other words would you use to describe yourself? : Leather
How old were you when you first realised your identity? : 20
How old were you when you first told someone? : 23
Did you plan it? If so, how? : Didn't plan it.
What made you choose that person to tell? : Coincidence and I just kind of felt like I needed to take some kind of first step.
Can you remember exactly what you said? : I think the first time I told somebody, my friends mentioned that a bunch of girls were coming to a party at our house, I said something like "That doesn't really apply to me". A couple of days later, my one roommate asked if I came out that evening... I told him "I guess so"
How did you feel? : Felt good that I didn't really need to hide myself any more.
What was the person’s reaction? : Didn't care one way or another. Probably the best reaction I could have hoped for.
What did they say? : Something like "That's totally cool with me"
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? : Not a noticable change.
What’s it like now? : Still not much of a change.
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. : Nope
Since coming out how out are you at school? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you at work? : all_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with family? : partly_out
Since coming out, how “out” are you with your friends? : all_out
What does being out mean to you? : Telling relevant people about my sexuality.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? : I think my mother told me when I was 8 "I'll love you always, even if you're gay". She probably had it figured out a long time before I did.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? : Somebody who actively says that they're straight, rather than not mentioning their sexuality or saying that they're gay
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? : Do it when you're ready. Be comfortable with yourself before you decide to blab to everybody that you're a big gay fag.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? : Would have done it earlier, but I wasn't comfortable enough with myself... Coming out was more difficult for me because I am "straight-acting", whatever that's supposed to mean. I had to be comfortable with identifying myself as being one and the same with effeminate guys, butch girls, and people who do not conform to regular ol' gender roles
Anything you want to add? : Go to a leather bar :)
