Under: Lesbian
Country & city: Houston, Texas, USA
Name/nickname: Brianne/Brain
Age: 24
Gender: Female
What did you come out as (gay, bi, transgendered, use any terms you like here)? Lesbo
What other words would you use to describe yourself? Grade A, Top Shelf, Premium, Crème de la crème, Delusional
How old were you when you first realized your identity? 12 or 13
How old were you when you first told someone? 16
Did you plan it? If so, how? Not really. Took a bottle of pills, figured I was gonna die anyway and told my mom.
What made you choose that person to tell? Because she asked me why I took a whole bottle of pills. LOL
Can you remember exactly what you said? Something along the lines of, “I love vajayjay.”
How did you feel? Nauseous
What was the person’s reaction? Cried, then called Poison Control.
What did they say? Dummy, you can’t kill yourself by taking a bottle of antibiotics.
What was your relationship with the person like afterwards? Have you ever seen Mommy Dearest?
What’s it like now? A mix between getting your hand caught in the garbage disposal and pure bliss.
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? Kevin Clayton
What happened? He told everyone at work.
What were peoples’ reactions? Not sure.
If you’ve experienced homophobia etc, please give an example. Someone chased my wife and I down at the bus station to tell us we were going to hell.
Since coming out, how “out” are you in the following areas of your life:
Educational institution: All the way
Job: Completely
Family: To my mother’s side of the family.
Friends: Total flamer
What does being out mean to you? That I don’t have to be ashamed of who I am, and not giving a crap if anyone else approves of who I choose to spend my life with.
What differences, if any, did your cultural background make to your experience of coming out? I’m not sure if I have much of a cultural background, but being raised by a farmer in the south sure makes it pretty tough.
What does the concept of the closet mean to you? Pretending to be someone you’re not.
What advice would you give someone wanting to come out? Try to connect with someone who has gone through the experience already. Find a group, a gay friend, someone online, a pen pal, etc. It helps to have someone to talk to.
If you could do it all again, would you do it any differently? If so, how? No.
