Not such a Friendly City After All, PE?

Posted by ulla on Monday, August 29, 2011, In : ECLGBTI Media

The refusal of staff at Port Elizabeth Home Affairs to perform a civil union between Donovan Wynne and Michael Cronje recently, although it falls within the letter of the law, is unconstitutional. It is also reactionary; South Africa proudly and justifiably boasts of having one of the most progressive and liberal constitutions in the world and yet recently, Port Elizabeth Home Affairs have effectively wiped their feet on it, displaying an alarmingly conservative point of view.

Out in Africa Weekend

Posted by ulla on Sunday, August 7, 2011, In : East London

This weekend East London was lucky enough to host its second ever Out in Africa Film Festival ... and a braai too. The photo is of the ECLGBTI Organisation's new banner - look out for it at the Pride March later this year.

Protest Against the Rape & Murders of LGBTI People - more photos

Posted by ulla on Monday, May 16, 2011, In : Protest Action
These photographs are by Zamanguni Mzimela, the Chairperson of the EC LGBTI Organisation, based in East London. The protest was called for and organised at extremely short notice, flashmob style and the team got organised fast.

Now there's a couch being put to good use. Although the organisation is not a religious one, many members have strong christian beliefs.

East Londoners Protest the Rape and Murder of Lesbians and Transgender People

Posted by ulla on Sunday, May 15, 2011, In : ECLGBTQ Forum
It was a kind of flashmob, I guess - not to mention proof that occasionally, Facebook activism does actually transfer out of the zone of cyberspace and powerfully into what we tend (online) to call "real life." (For more background and photos and an explanation of the agenda, go here)

So East London is sometimes (often) looked down on by the rest of the country for being backwards and stuff ... but sometimes this place can astonish a person very pleasantly indeed. Take our first ever pride mar...

I said "throw shapes!" and the fun, funky, informal street photoshoot was underway. Photos are posted in the order I took them and it all happened fast. Beautiful, beautiful lesbians.

Phillip Webb - Mr Gay East London 2010

Posted by ulla on Thursday, March 3, 2011, In : Club Eden

That’s Philip Webb, who is 2010′s Mr Gay East London. I photographed him on Friday night at Club Eden’s relaunch. Eden’s the only queer club in town and it’s just had a major facelift.

Wouldn’t he be just gorgeous to photograph in a studio?

Such a beautiful boy.

Club Eden Relaunch November 2010

Posted by ulla on Thursday, March 3, 2011, In : Club Eden

Welcome to Club Eden – it’s my local queer club. Sally and her staff and family and friends renovated it and threw a party to celebrate.

Note the apple in the dancefloor tiles there – eden – geddit?

As ever, it’s a complete mix of queer and not so queer revellers.

Some of them are beautiful.

The owner is Sally Prins – butch dyke extraordinaire.

They’ve got two bars – this was my view of one of them.

Pieter is Philip’s boyfriend – he’s gorgeous too...

2010 - East London's first lbgt pride march EVER!

Posted by ulla on Thursday, March 3, 2011,

me!

Saturday 17th April 2010 bore witness to a quietly historical event, East London’s first LGBT pride march.  Possibly it should have been better publicised and certainly, more national and provincial organisations should have been invited, should have been present.

The University of Fort Hare and the only local LGBT nightclub, Club Eden, were there and on the t-shirts too (thank you!) and the Eastern Cape Gay and Lesbian Forum was there.  Here’s how it went …

A small crowd gat...

Coral Reef Lodge - Gay, Gay Friendly and Friendly in East London

Posted by ulla on Sunday, June 7, 2009, In : East London

Coral Reef is in Quigney, East London, which means it's central and really close to the sea.  It's also within easy reach of the city's gay club (Club Eden) as well as a bunch of other bars and restaurants - and the aquarium.  There's usually a proud rainbow flag flying, but the wind murdered the last one - no worries though, as soon as you're welcomed by owner David, you'll know you're with family.  The staff are friendly, the breakfast is great - included in their very reasonable rates, you...

Club Eden - The Beauty Pageant 2009

Posted by ulla on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, In : Club Eden

I've been so busy processing and uploading photographs of Saturday night's Gay Beauty Pageant at East London's Arts Theatre, that I almost forgot I should write about it all before the memories fade from your minds and mine.  The event sold out fast and the crowd, it has to be said, was fantastic.  The evening was relaxed, vibey and fun - the audience was also really mixed, reflecting the fact that East London's one and only gay club, Club Eden, is really mixed too.  As backwards as this East...

Club Eden Mr/Ms Gay 2009 - Green Gown/Red Dress

Posted by ulla on Sunday, May 31, 2009, In : Club Eden

I don't know her name, but I reckon somebody will tell me soon.  I became fascinated by the way she moved the moment she appeared on stage.

And reflecting the movement, the shadow.

I took a lot of photographs of her - quite a few more than I'm posting here today.

As gracious as a dowager.  Respect.

Occasionally I take a technically bad photo that I just love.  This is one of them.

Quick change.

And I got completely and utterly mesmerised by her hands ...

Mr/Ms Club Eden 2009 - The Judges

Posted by ulla on Sunday, May 31, 2009, In : Club Eden
Stardate 30 May 2009.  The venue: Arts Theatre, East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa.  I took 708 photos and I haven't sorted them all out yet - I also want to post them within various categories, so I'll be updating them soon.  I don't have pictures of all of the judges here, for example - I'm not sure I photographed them all, but I know I have pics of at least one more of them, so.. watch this space.  Or something.

Club Eden's Uniform Party

Posted by ulla on Saturday, May 2, 2009, In : Club Eden

That's Sally there in the construction gear - she runs Club Eden in Arcadia, East London and last night i.e. Saturday 1 May 2009, there was a uniform party ... Sally's apparel, darlings, was especially appropriate for Workers' Day.

That's Anna behind the bar in schoolgirl style.  By the way, East London's a little city and Club Eden, although marketed as a gay club, is frequented by a very mixed crowd.

That's the shooters bar - everyone who dressed up got a free shooter.

Sally and Jackie - const...
