The Lesbian Love Junkie

Aquila Wolf-Wild: The Lesbian Love Junkie

Actually she’s The Lesbian Love Junkie, an Australian singer and, believe it or not, lesbian.  Feel free at any point in this interview, to listen to her latest song.  It won’t cost you a cent and I guarantee it’ll make you grin.  It’s a brilliant stage name, isn’t it?  You’ll find her on Facebook as Aquila Wolf-Wild.  Finger right on the pulse of lesbian culture there and I’m convinced it’s ideal for a t-shirt (she says underwear first though).  She describes her music as “Sexy, Funky, Dirty, Electronica, Blues” and that’s accurate.  She’s easy on the eye and has interesting stories to tell.  I had a listen to her music and then interviewed her online.

Were you a singer before you came out? No, I wasn’t a singer before I came out. Although during my teens I had performed in several Pro/Amateur Theatre Productions. I have always written poetry and songs, for as far back as I can remember, when I was a wee little gal.

Do you experience much homophobia as an out, queer artist? Not as a queer artist, but as an individual I have.

Should celebrities come out, or are they entitled to their privacy? I think celebrities are definitely entitled to their privacy. But for me, being so honest and open is important, as I lived most of my life “in the closet” and there is no way I am ever going to go back in!

How do your kids feel about your career? My daughter thinks it’s great, she is an aspiring singer, and so she can relate to what I do. I don’t have much contact with my sons, but that not due to me being a performer, it is the result of a very messy divorce.

We’ve all been hearing a lot about prop 8 and American issues in general - what are the Australian LGBTQ issues at the moment? We are very lucky in Australia, because here we have so much freedom… Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech and many other liberties we take for granted. However, we have many of the same issues faced in the U.S. and other countries around the world. My personal opinion is that we need to stand united, and fight for the basic rights and freedoms that every individual should be entitled to in our country regardless of sexual orientation. Fighting for the right to “Marry” as a gay or Lesbian couple is fine if you believe in the institution of marriage, or have religious beliefs that make marriage important to you. I just don’t think that the whole of our community will benefit from that. Will that mean that we will need to be legally married in order to be at our partner’s bedside if they were ever in an intensive care unit? Does that mean that we will need to be married to be accepted by society as in a committed relationship? I really feel we have gone off track. I support the fight for gay marriage; however, I don’t need anyone to stamp a marriage certificate to deem my relationship as “valid”, and I would prefer to put all my energy into fighting for “freedom”.

How lesbian is your world? Very… I am often seen on Oxford Street in Sydney, in most of the well known Gay clubs partying like there is no tomorrow. I have a nice balanced group of friends, a lovely cocktail of… StraightBiGayLesbianQueenKingFagHags.

Your eponymous song really says it all … and it’s great that it’s a free download. Is this a teaser for an album? Absolutely!!! I am in the process of working with producers on different tracks in order to release an album, no time line as yet, so keep an eye on my facebook fan page or my Official Lesbian Love Junkie Website.  I have written more than enough good material for at least 2 albums. Would love to get a recording contract, and do my music full time. I suppose it’s all timing and meeting the right people, and that just hasn’t happened yet… but it will.

What does the future hold for The Lesbian Love Junkie? I want to turn my life story, or at least part of it, into a Musical a big production like “Priscilla”. It will be BIG… LOUD… SAD… FUNNY & everything in between. I hope to use this medium, to help shift some of societies perception of what a “Lesbian” is. Priscilla has achieved that for the gay community I believe, and this I have witnessed. I went to see Priscilla a couple of years ago, with a lesbian friend. We were stared at by the Matinee goers, and so were the numerous gay guys waiting in the foyer before the show. They were staring at all of us and shaking their heads whilst muttering to each other in their obvious disgust. By the end of the show, people were coming out into the foyer, and they were now smiling at the gay guys. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the same response to us, and we were definitely still unacceptable to them.

What else are you hooked on besides lesbian love? Dancing all night long at the infamous underground bar “Pheonix” on Oxford Street, especially their “Dirty” or “Go underground” nights with the hard core D.J.’s Mel “Feisty” Fitzpatrick & Mandy Rollins… those gals ROCK!! They do a dirty mix of deep sexy tech through to dirty tribal house… Hypnotic, Sexy, Dark & Oh the Bass… I am so addicted to the Bass.

What do you consider the high and low points of your career so far? High… Performing in general, that’s a natural high and one that nothing can compare to! Low… performing after finding out the person I love doesn’t get my music, and really doesn’t like the way I sound. I get to the part of my show where I am singing a love song I wrote to her, looking directly into her eyes, and it just ripped me apart. But hey, that blend of raw and mixed emotion, just improves the performance, and gives me another experience to write about. It’s all perception really, and I guess you can turn any negative into a positive, if you choose to.

Got any groupies/stalkers? Not that I know of, so far I think I have stayed under the radar, and I prefer it that way.

Do you have any queer role models? The singer & comedian Lea DeLaria, someone I only discovered recently, what a gutsy woman. She is controversial and so outspoken, she doesn’t hold back, and speaks the truth as she sees it. And what a voice!

What’s your dream? To get signed by a record label, and perform all over the world.
